Pray For Our President

by Pastor Ritchie on Jan.20, 2009, under Leadership

One thing that really baffles me is the bile and venom that comes from the radical right and the liberal left when it comes to politics. I understand the passion, especially when you feel that you are dealing with moral issues that come from the very core of your belief system. What I don’t understand is how that people who claim to believe God’s Word can so blatantly ignore what God says. Paul wrote in I Timothy 2:1-3, “I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior.” Evidently many Christians skip that part when it comes to presidential politics.

Praying for our president is the right thing to do. It is a Biblical command. We should pray for guidance, protection, obedience, and God’s will. Certainly if Paul told believers to pray for political leaders who were absolute pagans, atheists, polytheists, deeply immoral, and who tortured and killed Christians WE out to pray for our president. For some reason there seems to be many people who cannot get their head around the idea that if you did not vote for a person or if you disagree with a leader politically that you can’t be civil or work with them on the ideas that you do agree with. I am not suggesting to check your brain at the door or to abandon your quest for Biblically-based political ideas. Just understand that you are not going to agree with ANY president all of the time, most likely. I did not agree with all of what any of the presidents in my adult lifetime did, but they were still my president and I prayed for them. By the way, don’t ever say that whoever is serving in the office of President of the United States is not your president. I have heard so many people say that and I want to ask them if they are a citizen of the USA, and if they enjoy the freedoms that are afforded us here.

Anyway, I hope that you will uphold our new president in prayer today and every day. God tells us that we need to pray and I promise you that President Obama needs our prayers.

Thank you, God, for the privilege to live in the greatest county in the world.

I am a member of Northway Church in Clifton Park N.Y.;Our pastor,Buddy Cremeans through his blog, has referred this post to us. Thank you Ritchie for so eloquently encouraging Christians, (even the ones who did not vote for Obama)to pray for our president! Yes, I agree, he certainly does need our prayers, this country, I believe, was founded on Christian principle;God knows how much we need people to lead us who live by these principles. Thank-You Jesus for giving us this new President,Thy will be done. Amen

I totally agree, and since the two-party system inherently shapes this attitude,I believe our lord would like us to think and feel independently, and to not harbor the ills, going along with whatevever one party feels, attitudes formed for us. It seems that non independence from this system, does not give us the opportunity to elect persons, who share our ideals and pigeon hole us with sometmes greed, power inflicted, persons who only care about being reelected,as Buddy often says,i feel they are self medicating, and not following a path directed by God, and the teaching of Jesus. I will pray for them and us,as i hope all who love God and Jesus would want us too. Thanks to Ritchie for his comments, we can learn a lot from reading others thoughts, and share our ideals with them.

Thank you so much especially for resounding I Timothy so precisely. Although I did not vote for this President nor agree with his strong abortion beliefs. I’m compelled to pray for Mr. Obama because he is our leader and our Lord has allowed him to rule this nation. There is a plan in place and I hope our new President will yield to the one true God. I’ll pray for our President to ‘do right’for this nation as well as for the President and his family-protection, guidance and strength during these times.

As Christians we should always subscribe to praying for our leaders. People are flawed but God is Love. He allowed President Obama to take office and to not pray for him would be detrimental to our country. We live in the best country in the world and I am proud to be a Christian in America where we have more freedom and rights than anywhere else. I don’t agree with most of what he stands for and did not vote for him but we don’t always get what we want in life. Character is revealed through trying circumstances and ultimately God will prevail.

Pastor Richie, I am one of Pastor Buddys people from Northway Church. I too am dismayed when I hear Christians bashing our new president and many times each other. We just have to remember that many Christians may not be where they should be in their spirital lives. Gal. 5:13-26 tells us that without the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we will fall far short of Gods will for us. Verses 22 & 23 are a good yard stick as to where people are in their walk with the Lord. God bless you and the work you are doing for the Lord.
