What you say matters. It matters to God and it matters to the people around you. Your words either build up or tear down. I have read that one harsh, cutting, and hurtful statement can only be overcome by a minimum of seven positive, loving, and uplifting statements. It seems like our brain is hardwired by sin to remember the lies, the negative, the hurtful, and the harsh rather than the truth of Jesus. Jesus said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” It is only when we reject the lies of Satan and persistently live with the truths of the Word of God that we can overcome the negative and the hurtful.
King Solomon wrote, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” (Proverbs 18:21) Your words have the power to give life or death to the people around you. We must remember that our words have power. They have the power to encourage or discourage. They can build up or destroy. They can motivate and inspire or anger and derail. The right word spoken at the right time can open a door or close a door. It can create opportunity or destroy opportunity. It can affect someone’s eternal destiny. It can create peace and harmony in the home or it can cause bitterness, remorse, and retaliation.
I sincerely believe that our words are connected to our faith. I constantly have to remind myself not to speak negative, faithless words. My words can bring death to my dreams, my relationships, and my future. Or I can use faith-filled words to speak blessing and hope. I speak blessings in faith. That is not just positive thinking. It is faith thinking. I don’t believe positive thinking results in faith but I do believe faith results in positive thinking.
Take your words seriously today. Be happy. Be Jesus-centered and joy-filled. Build up rather than tear down. Taking control of your words will empower and inspire your future. Your words are powerful. Choose them wisely.
